POWER HOUSE & Solar Decathlon Europe 2012

What is Solar Decathlon Europe 2012?

What is Solar Decathlon Europe 2012?

The Solar Decathlon Europe is an international competition among universities which promotes research in the development of efficient houses. The objective of the participating teams is to design and build houses that consume as few natural resources as possible and produce minimum waste products during their life cycle.

All of these teams are supported by one or more universities and have the economic and technical support from institutions and companies. The main figures during the whole process, from the design to the last phase of the competition in Madrid are the students, known as ‘Decathletes’, who are guided by a professor, the ‘Faculty Advisor’.

The main institution boosting the Solar Decathlon Europe is the Spanish Ministry of Public Works, through the Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Development and with the collaboration of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the European Union and the U.S. Department of Energy. The SDEurope competition is also supported by Madrid City Council and the IDAE (Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy) and many private and public companies.

SDE is an official partner in the European Commission’s Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign and has been recently awarded at the EU Sustainable Energy Europe Awards.

Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 & the Social Housing Sector

It is important that ecological objectives are not achieved to the detriment of social objectives. Currently the cost of building nearly-Zero or positive energy housing is over stretching the budget of non-for-profit housing providers represented by CECODHAS Housing Europe.

Social housing must be suitable for a large variety of users and require limited and simple maintenance and possibilities for adaptation throughout their life cycle. Simplicity, scale and standardization are key.

For this reason, innovations are looked for in design and execution processes, applied techniques and materials, as well as in use and maintenance aspects and potential partnerships and alternative types of procurement. The innovations must be applicable on a larger scale, be liable to repetition and preferably offer sufficient flexibility in terms of design.

Once the Solar Decathlon Teams have submitted state of the art housing design projects, a dedicated jury composed by Social Housing specialists will evaluate the proposed projects and award the “Social Housing meets Solar Decathlon Europe Award - For a Fair Energy Transition in the EU” based on usability and affordability (both in the construction and use-phase) criteria from the perspective of the residents and the providers.

This award, which focuses on design innovation, will be accompanied by special mention awards to replicable projects particularly in Warm/Mediterranean and Cold/Continental climates.

The selected projects will be presented and awarded during the “CECODHAS Housing Europe meets Solar Decathlon Europe Symposium” (click HERE to download the Draft Programme) on Wednesday 26 September at Casa de Campo, Madrid.
