"BSHF Study Visit to Eco-city project" - 17-19 May 2011, Malmo

The Building and Social Housing Foundation is organising a three day visit to the award winning Augustenborg Eco-city project in Malmo, Sweden from 17–19 May 2011.

BSHF will be meeting all costs during the visit itself, as well as providing bursaries towards the cost of international travel.

Description of the project:

In 1998, the City of Malmö and MKB Housing Company initiated an extensive urban renovation of the Augustenborg District, a run down inner-city area, prone to heavy flooding and with severe economic and social problems. An integrated approach was used, with a particular focus on working with residents as it set about transforming an existing neighbourhood into a more environmentally sustainable and attractive place to live.
Extensive renovation work has now been completed on the 1,600 rental apartments in the area and the flooding problems have been solved with the development of an integrated open storm water management system and use of green roofs.
Carbon emissions have been reduced by over 20 per cent and the neighbourhood has once again become a popular one. Residents were actively involved throughout the planning processes, especially of waste management and the car-pooling, recycling and composting. Ideas pioneered in Augustenborg have been applied elsewhere in Sweden as well as in cities throughout the world.
