Short Description

Wonen Wijdemeren has started a large scale refurbishment project, to improve the living conditions of the residents. There is a focus on energy saving techniques. New techniques for ventilation are applied; Climarad for a good indoor air quality (www.climarad.nl) and Ecolution for waterheating (www.inventum.com).
The refurbishment is challenging because most of the inhabitants are elderly people. They need special attention during the refurbishment. They can stay in their own houses, but during daytime they have the possibility to stay somewhere else.

Key Elements

Work with Residents

The residents are involved in the refurbishment. The project emphasizes on awareness raising on energy saving. There is also attention for a good and healthy indoor climate.

Air Tightness

Climarad is some kind of radiator, which measures the CO2 level in the room. When the level is too high, the hot air that leaves the room is used to heat the cold, fresh air that comes from outside. www.climarad.nl

Heating and Hot Water

Ecolution is a heating device. It uses the hot air which is removed for ventilation, to heat up water.

Funding

The project is financed by Wonen Wijdemeren. For the current residents there is no increase in rent. Future residents will pay the price based on the increased comfort of the houses.

Thermal Insulation

The newest techniques for insulation are used. The whole house, including floor and roof are insulated.

Water Saving

The residents get a watersaving coach, to raise awareness to save water.

Windows and Shading

Windows are HR++

Main Results

The main challenge, but also the main outcome, was to motivate people to get involved in the refurbishment process. People did not oppose to the refurbishment, because the rent did not increase. But it was difficult to explain the benefits of the new applications. Now that the first houses have been constructed, the inhabitants are very pleased with the result.

The comfort of the houses have increased.

Next year we will know how much energy is saved with the new techniques.

Lessons learned

A clear and sufficient communication with the inhabitants is very important. We had 3 meetings to explain the process and the changes. Most of the people in the neighbourhood are elderly people, so they needed extra attention.

Some people could move into a temporary house. Most people stayed in their own house.

We arranged a taxi for the elderly people, so they could spend the day in an aged care home, when the inconvenience of the construction would be too much.
