Short Description

BRF Toppsockret has under a period of ten years worked goal oriented towards lowering the energy use in an cost efficient way. This has resulted in thermal insulation, ventilation measures and lighting measures. Along with the work to lower energy use the garbage management have been improved and residents have been empowerd along the way.

Key Elements

Thermal Insulation

Upgraded thermal insulation of the attic with another 300mm (total 450mm) insulating material in 2004. This has resulted in better comfort in the dwellings on the upper floors. The out going have been possible to reduce by 2,5 degrees Celsius which is equivalent 10-15% reduced energy use.

In 2005 the thermal insulation on the gables was made thicker +80mm.

Ventilation

In 2004 the ventilation system was upgraded. The new fans are 28% more electricity efficient than the former once from 1964. The fans are steered by outer temperature and goes down in effect when outside temperature is low, which has the result that less outside air has to be heated, thereby reducing energy use.

Heating and Hot Water

The internal heat system is steered by in advance weather prediction so that the system can use the regulation as efficient as possible related to outside temperature.

Electricity Saving Products

In 2004 the 123 armatures in public spaces (stairwell and so on) were upgraded. 32W strip light + 60W light bulb were exchanged to 11W+11W low energy light bulb. This resulted in 28% reduced electricity use for public spaces.

Lighting outside were also exchanged in 2004 going from 125W to 60W, 52% lower effect with sustained light quality.

In 2011 it is planned to replace the former light armatures with energy efficient models.

See also the section on ventilation.

Other Renewables

Toppsockret is since 2007 share owner in a windmill. The shares owned by Toppsockret gives them the right to/produces altogether 112 000 kWh/year, which is 100% of the tenant owners associations electricity use (household use excluded).

Water Saving

Water saving mouthpieces was installed in the showers, sinks and kitchen, in 2004. When measured after four months cold water had been reduced with 17% and warm water by 19% (which is equivalent to a reduced use of district hearting energy by 3,8-7,6%, if energy for warm water use is 20-40% of total use of district heating energy).

Work with Residents

Extensive environmental and energy saving advices available on homepage. Results of the progress of the energy saving work in the tenant owner association are also posted on the homepage.

Certification

The Energy Declaration was completed in 2007, amongst the first declarations completed in Sweden. (The Swedish Energy

Declaration of Buildings Act implements Directive 2002/91/EC).

Main Results

In the period of 1998-2009 the systematic work have resulted in 18% reduction of use of district heating energy. And in the period of 2000-2008 it has resulted in a 21% reduction of electricity for public spaces.
